My inspiration came from Instagram. Through my research, I saw a lot of people creating awareness of women’s issues and feminist topics using art and illustrations as a medium. That’s when I thought about creating a zine around these themes and using it as a form of visual communication. They were well received and people seemed to take to this visual approach which also connects with my target audience.
I’ve always been very passionate about feminist issues, however, I never used to call myself a “feminist” as the word today can have some extreme connotations. I’ve come to realise that despite “feminism” being classed as a bad thing in some areas of society, it’s important to create awareness and show people the issues women face in their lives, on a day to day basis. The younger generations need to be educated about equality, especially the male gender! A change in society needs to be made and in creating an educational zine, I hope to make a change, whether that be to a big group of people or one person. I want people to have an understanding of what it’s like to be a woman in 2019.
