Question: How can interdisciplinary research that joins history, folklore, religion, and geography inform my visual understanding of the natural environment in response to a landscape practice?
This project examines past and present influences on the Parish of Wembury, South Hams, Devon. Karen Tomlinson’s work seeks to express the inexpressible, while simultaneously responding to the role of site-specific influences on place. Karen draws inspiration from Wembury’s natural environment as she explores the relationship between the indexicality of place and her art. The process is both subconscious and intuitive as rich imagery, geologic textures and colour are embedded in layers within her artwork to create a history of place.
