JUDY HARRINGTON

UNNATURAL TIDES'

Installation + video with sound

Plastic has become a ‘natural’ part of our environment: in our homes, our clothes, the structure of buildings, packaging everything and invading the land and oceans. It is a profitable bi-product of the oil industry (which has a vested interest in perpetuating our addiction to this dangerous material): so useful, convenient, indestructible…

Following a dream in which she was buried in plastic rubbish, Judy produced a performance piece which was shown around Plymouth last summer, producing considerable attention and publicity. This has developed into a film entitled UNNATURAL TIDES which has been produced in collaboration with Thomas Cass (Yr 2 Media Studies at PCA). The darkness of the Anthropocene and the prospect of the 6th extinction is upon us. We must wake up and realise that this is a reality. Water and death go hand in hand, in our dreams…

The installation is bathed in UV light, and plastic hangings are painted with fluorescing pigments. Fluorescence is part of the underwater world, aiding communication and photosynthesis. The colours also suggest danger, radiation, the supernatural, so we feel unsettled.
