JO HART

Spiritus Vitae (“Breath of Life”)

Jo Hart was inspired by the concept of the Tree of Life and trees being described as “the lungs of the Earth”.

The internal structure of a lung is very similar to that of the branches of a bare tree. There is a symbiotic relationship between human respiration and tree photosynthesis. Humans take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide and trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, representing a circle of life.

Jo has combined kiln-formed and hot glass techniques with hand constructed copper mesh, which creates pockets of air within the glass that represents the lung’s alveoli.
