HENRIETTA PAINE

Henrietta Paine makes paintings that amplify momentary negotiations of connection and contact between men. Drawing on her observation of a series of Contact Improvisation workshops, her images explore homosocial metaphors that are found in un-choreographed interaction and movement. Combining painting with an expanded book-making practice, Henrietta also explores the types of attention we are usually expected to grant artworks. Inspired by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Cecily Brown, she pictures men using a gestural painting language that was, for many years, understood to be a properly masculine preserve.
