FLORENCE NEWSOME

Nurturing Curiosity the Open-Ended Way

Question: What are the key elements needed when using playful objects through an open-ended approach in order to enhance children's curiosity of their natural surroundings?

Florence Newsome creates objects and environments that aim to nurture curiosity, imagination and learning through an open-ended approach. She wants to convey the idea that open-ended play and objects are limitless. The Curiosity Bag is an environmentally-focused pedagogy inspired by The Reggio Emilia approach and was designed through a practice-led research into open-ended exploration, playing and creating. The project outlines the beneficial elements of using open-ended objects as provocations to enrich nature-based play and provides a framework of supporting elements with the goal of enhancing outdoor play experiences and learning.
